Florida ADRD Training Requirements for New Hires: What You Need to Know
In Florida, all licensed care settings serving adults and seniors must comply with strict Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) training requirements. These rules ensure that employees are prepared to support individuals living with ADRD with compassion, skill, and understanding.
Under 430.5025 F.A.C., Florida law sets universal ADRD training requirements for:
- Nursing homes
- Home health agencies
- Nurse registries
- Companion or homemaker service providers
- Health care services pools
- Assisted living facilities (ALFs)
- Adult family-care homes (AFCHs)
- Adult day care centers (ADCCs)
- Care settings offering specialized Alzheimer’s or memory care services
Key Training Requirements
- Basic Written Information at Hire: Every new employee must receive written information on interacting with individuals who have ADRD upon starting their job. This helps staff understand core principles for respectful and supportive care.
- Initial Training: Staff with regular contact with or who provide personal care to individuals with ADRD must complete the Department of Elder Affairs’ one-hour training program within 30 days of hire.
-
Additional Training: After the initial one-hour course, employees must complete further department-approved training. The hours and deadlines vary by care setting:
- Home health, companion/homemaker service, nurse registry: 2 additional hours within 7 months of hire.
- Assisted living facilities and adult day care: 3 additional hours within 7 months.
- Memory care settings: 3 additional hours within 3 months, plus 4 more hours within 6 months, and annual continuing education.
- Hospice: 3 additional hours within 9 months (initial training allowed within 3 months).
Why This Matters
Florida’s ADRD training requirements ensure that staff across all licensed care environments have the skills to:
- Recognize ADRD symptoms
- Respond effectively to challenging behaviors
- Create safe, supportive environments for people living with dementia
